Going for Gold: Play the Music of This Year's Grammy Winners

The Grammys are a time for musicians around the world to shine bright for one special night of the year and this year’s 55th Annual Grammy Awards were no exception. Music stars strutted their stuff on the infamous red carpet before diving into the night’s award ceremony. As always, there were fan favorites, from newcomers to legendary stars of rock n’ roll, but even the most avid music fan could not have guessed the results of this year’s ceremony.

Pop music always brings a wide range of talent to the field so it was not surprising that this year’s Best Pop Solo Performance category was filled with talented performers. Despite the tough competition, British songstress Adele was awarded the Grammy for her performance of “Set Fire to the Rain” this year. Adele is no newcomer to the Grammy’s, having won her first two Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009. Still, with competition from major female artists like Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kelly Clarkson, this year’s Grammy was no easy win for Adele.

While Kelly Clarkson may have lost out to Adele for Best Pop Solo Performance, Ms. Clarkson’s album Stronger won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. The album debuted at the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 and went Platinum. This year’s Grammys had a strong female presence with pop music performers Beyonce and Rihanna going home with awards for their vocal performances.

Beyonce has been rocking the international stage, most recently performing at the Super Bowl for millions of viewers. This year Beyonce took home the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance with her song “Love on Top”. Singer Rihanna also found Grammy gold with her collaboration with artist Calvin Harris, known for his eccentric and offbeat musical stylings. The pair worked together on the song “We Found Love” and were awarded the Best Short Form Music Video Grammy in 2013.

Carrie Underwood enjoyed another winning year at the Grammys, walking away with two Grammy awards in the Country music category. Ever since she jumped into the world of Country music, Underwood has made a name for herself. Her songwriting skills and vocal abilities earned her the Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance from her album Blown Away.

But this year was not just about newcomers and up-in-coming music stars. Long time Beatles fans cheered as Paul McCartney was awarded a Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album Grammy for his album Kisses on the Bottom. Paul McCartney once again showed that music gets better with age and rock never dies.

These music stars and many more were awarded coveted Grammys on February 10th.
